Black History Celebration & Historical Marker Reveal
DAYTONA BEACH, FL - On Saturday, February 19, 2022 at 2:00 pm EST the Harold V. Lucas, Jr. Foundation, Inc. will host its second annual Black History Celebration at The Lucas Center in Daytona Beach, FL. Author of Florida's Historic African American Homes, Mrs. Jada Wright-Greene will lead a conversation on the significance of historic places to the understanding of Black History. The event will also feature a message from the Founder and President Mr. Harold V. Lucas, Jr., a special musical performance and the reveal of the Harold V. Lucas, Sr. Home Site historical marker.
The Lucas Center, home of the Harold V. Lucas, Jr. Foundation, now stands on the site where Harold V. Lucas, Sr.’s home once stood. The home site of Mr. Harold V. Lucas, Sr. has been granted a Historical Marker by the Florida Historical Marker Council. Lucas, Sr. was an educator and entrepreneur. Lucas, Sr. served in administrative and faculty capacities at Bethune-Cookman College for nearly 40 years. He was the first male teacher and he founded the school's business department. In addition to his work at Bethune, Lucas, Sr. operated the city’s first black printing company and private classes from his home.
The event is open to the public and will be held at The Lucas Center, 718 Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Blvd., Daytona Beach, FL 32114. All attendees will be required to wear a mask. The event will also be broadcast live on the foundation’s Facebook page at facebook.com/HVLFoundation.
