Historical Marker Granted!

DAYTONA BEACH, FL - On Thursday, May 20, 2021 the site of The Home of Mr. Harold V. Lucas, Sr. was approved by the Florida Historical Marker Council to receive a Historical Marker! The Harold V. Lucas, Jr. Foundation submitted the application for the marker earlier this year and it is so befitting that the approval has come during Historic Preservation Month, the month celebrating the nation's heritage through historic places.

Mr. Harold V. Lucas, Sr. was an educator and entrepreneur. Lucas, Sr. served in administrative and faculty capacities at Bethune-Cookman College for nearly 40 years. He was the first male teacher and he founded the school's business department. In addition to his work at Bethune, Lucas, Sr. operated businesses and private classes from his home. The Lucas Center, home of the Harold V. Lucas, Jr. Foundation, now stands on the site where Lucas Sr.’s home once stood in the Daytona Beach Midway area, now known as Midtown. The property has been in the Lucas family since 1920.

The Florida Historical Marker Program is one of the Division of Historical Resources' most popular and visible public history programs. It is designed to raise public awareness of Florida’s rich cultural history and to enhance the enjoyment of Florida’s historic sites by citizens and tourists. These markers allow us to tell the stories of the places and people who created the Florida that we all enjoy today, by identifying the churches, schools, archaeological sites, battlefields and homes that represent our past.

The Harold V. Lucas Jr. Foundation, Inc. is a Daytona Beach, Florida based tax exempt organization. It’s mission is to provide support to the historical and cultural development of the Daytona Beach Midtown community while continuing Mr. Lucas’ legacy of education, athletics, service, leadership, and philanthropy with a commitment to honor the past and contribute to the future.
